Simultaneous Photocatalytic Esterification and Addition Reaction of Fatty Acids in Kemiri Sunan (Reutealis trisperma sp.) Oil over CuO/TiO2 Catalyst - A Novel Approach

A novel approach, namely photocatalytic esterification and addition reaction of unsaturated fatty acids using CuO/TiO2 catalyst has been investigated in kemiri sunan oil. The objectives this study are to reduce the free acid (FFA) content by CuO/TiO2, characterization operation condition reaction. was synthesized impregnation TiO2 P25 powder with copper nitrate solution as a precursor followed calcination. field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX), Diffraction (XRD), Transmission microscopes (TEM) result showed that oxide highly dispersed on surface. Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) Cu is state CuO (Cu2+), while Ti Ti4+ ( TiO2). bandgap energy smaller than P25. It found reactions conducted presence photoreactor under UV irradiation can perform FFA, simultaneously. optimum reduction FFA 4% loading 4 hours time, 30:1 (mole/mole) methanol oil ratio, 5% (w/w) amount. conversion at around 59%. Gas Chromatography—Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) results -eleostearic simultaneously occured 100% conversion. Although photocatalyst selectivity relatively low, but double bond (C18:3) very high. multiple considered positive poin improve oxidative stability product. simultaneous mechanism proposed.
